Kidney Stone Question?

I had an ultrasound the other day as a follow up to one that I’d had several months ago. They just happened to find a 6mm stone in the kidney. I don’t have any symptoms of it yet, but now I’m scared that it’s going to move and I’m going to have all this pain that everyone describes. How long can this thing sit there without causing any symptoms? Is it just a matter of time before I’m in excruciating pain? I feel like a ticking time bomb is in my stomach. Has anyone had the laser surgery to break them up? What was it like? What should I do?

I have them in both kidneys, some larger than yours. They do hurt when they move in my experience, but so far it’s just a transient (passing) pain, meaning, it’s a “stop- you-in-your-tracks-type-pain,” but it goes away within a few seconds. I actually passed one without knowing what it was in the shower a few years ago. I heard it clink on the shower floor, and I picked it up and wondered where it came from. All I could think of was that it must have been a piece of sand even though it didn’t look like one. (It was round, greenish brown and pitted, and hard, just like a stone).
My doctors know I have them but none have suggested surgery. So I guess they just want to wait until I’m in excrutiating, debilitating constant pain before they do anything about it.

discuss this with your urologist/nephrologist. ask to speak to a previous surgery patient so that you can ask your questions.
