Hello. I am having to have a transabdominal ultrasound in 2 weeks due to strange pains that I was having in my stomach a few weeks ago. The pain is gone but I am still going to have the ultrasound to make sure everything is ok. Anyway, this is the first time I will be having an ultrasound. I refused the transvaginal one because I am a virgin and I cant even imagine what that would feel like. So anyway, they scheduled an transabdominal and told me before the exam to drink 32 ounces of water. Now my question is, what is the best technique for drinking the water and not having to piss all in the car on the way to the exam or sitting in the waiting room having to piss really bad? They tell you to drink the water an hour before the exam but I think that is a little bit too much…should I start drinking 30 minutes before? Then that way I wont be in so much agony?

Drink the water just like they said. You’ll be able to hold it as long as you don’t normally have a problem holding it for a short amount of time. There’s nothing really to an ultrasound. Mine consisted of gel being put on my tummy and/or side and the tech moving the metal bit around to see my insides. No pain and I didn’t even have to disrobe.
Just have a full bladder…like you have to pee but not crazy bad. They don’t want or expect you to be so full that you are miserable. In fact if your bladder is too full, you may be asked to release a bit.
