CAROTID ARTERIES ULTRA SOUND #3

THIS SCAN IS OF THE LEFT ARTERY, WHICH HAS PARTIAL OCCLUSION WHICH WAS FOUND DURING PREVIOUS MRI SCREENINGS. INTERESTING AND “COLORFUL” IF NOTHING ELSE!

What is this mysterious vision problem?

This post is a little long because I’ve included a brief medical history of myself. I would very much appreciate it if you would read or skim through it and offer some advice – if you’re short on time, just read the last 1/4 of it. I’m very nervous and am not sure where to turn for help. There’s a lot of diverse symptoms that my doctors haven’t been able to make sense of. I’ve included a lot of things that might not be relevant just in case they are.

I’m a 26 year old white male from the upper midwest USA, but I have been living in the northeast for a few years. I’m an architecture student. I’ve generally been described as healthy by my doctors and family. Here’s a chronology of what’s been going on.

————

Family history:
*Aunt on father’s side with severe diabetes and schizophrenia
*Mother has thyroid issue
*Uncle on mother’s side died at age 57 of heart attack; he was not overweight
*Brother has slight heart arrhythmia that does not affect his activity

Age 4:
*Surgery due to weak muscle in left eye to correct lazy eye.

Most of life:
*Frequent double vision – seeing two of the same thing due to the offset between the eyes (not present, obviously, when I have one eye closed); never went to eye doctor
*Vision is otherwise fine. Always score perfect on vision chart tests at doctor.
*Occasional fainting, usually from needles (getting shots or getting blood drawn); this happened a few times also after getting hit in the head. MRI and EEG at age 10 do not indicate any issues.
*Significant dandruff and itchy scalp problem.
*Mild Tremor in hands
*Always been told I am a fairly tense and intense person.

1994 (Age 13):
*Hands and feet become extremely swollen halfway through meal at Chinese restaurant. Doctor gives pills that I have to take every few hours for a week or else I get a lot of spots all over me. Allergy skin-test a few weeks later comes up totally negative. Cause for outbreak never determined.

Summer 1999 (Age 16):
*Blood in urine after working out; ultrasound indicates no issues.

Summer 2001 (Age 18):
*Moved to Europe for a year as an exchange student. During first month, began getting symptoms such as: (1) strong awareness of heartbeat, ability to see heart beating vibrate my abdomen (2) shortness of breath (3) difficulty sleeping. Doctor says this is just stress. After a month this calms down to a manageable level. EKG (while resting) is normal.

October 2001:
*Was unknowingly given hot chocolate laced with hashish by friends; a few hours later was very messed up. I was shaking like crazy and kept forgetting where I was – and thought something was seriously wrong with me. I was mostly better after a few hours.

April 2002:
*Wake up one morning with very sore and tense neck, shoulders, and lower back. Orthopedist (and x-rays) indicate that vertebrae in neck are arranged kind of straight when they should be arranged in a curve but can’t say whether this is a cause or a symptom. Physical therapy and acupuncture reduce problem but it is never fully solved and continues to this day.

August 2002 – June 2006 (In college):
*Overall seemingly good health.
*Occasionally drink heavily, but less than most college students
*Become sexually active, but never engage in activities of significant risk
*Go jogging/running/biking often. After jogging, often feel mild chest pains that go away soon
*In architecture school and internships, am occasionally exposed to things like (1) solvents for melting acrylic (2) fumes from laser-cutting acrylic, wood, and cardboard and (3) sawdust
*Frequently get much too little sleep due to school demands

August 2007 (Age 24):
*Enter graduate school for architecture. Health is seemingly fine.
*Get somewhat nervous because hairline is receding significantly even though no one in my family has any hair loss; doctor says this is genetic. I do not treat it.
*Begin again to be occasionally (frequently?) exposed to things like (1) solvents for melting acrylic (2) fumes from laser-cutting acrylic, wood, and cardboard (3) sawdust (4) glues and (5) spraypaint
*Begin again to frequently get much too little sleep due to school demands
*Occasionally watch laser-cutter in action, whcih means I am looking at intense laser light, although it is not pointing at my eyes.

March 2008:
*Travel to Asia, specifically China, for the first time; overall feel fine there and do not get sick.

April 2008:
*Begin sexual activity with somebody new for the first time in a while; as always, do not engage in any particularly risky activity.
*For the period of one week, get a few quarter-sized white bumps on hips each day. Spots are in different location each day and do not itch.

May 2008:
*Late at night, notice shadowing double-vision on text on computer screen; this is different than my typical double vision because it is present in each eye individually (when I close one eye, there is still double vision). T

what is the technique used in The Doctors show…?

…used to reduce belly fat with an ultrasound looking machine?…i think

i tried looking at their website but i couldn’t find it, they showed it in this weeks episode.
no, not liposuction, it wasn’t any type of surgery. It was done outside of the body, just like rubbing this ultrasound looking machine over the persons stomach, they said the machine gets really hot.
@Nate ….yeah, do u know where I can get more information about it??, or do u know what it’s called?

TCC Posterior_Urethra_17817A.m4v

Do you know how dogs with Transitional Cell Carcinoma (TCC or Bladder Cancer) can be helped? In the past, pets who developed this cancer were only give a few weeks to live after being diagnosed. Here at Ridgewood Veterinary Hospital, Dr. Dean Cerf developed an innovative technique that can often give many more months to years of life. His technique uses a diode laser, ultrasound, and endoscopy. While currently only performed at Ridgewood Veterinary Hospital, Dr. Cerf has been asked to teach other veterinarians both nationally and internationally how to perform this technique. A new test, the Veterinary Bladder Tumor Antigen (VBTA) test, has been developed to screen for this cancer using a urine sample. Dr. Cerf is urging dog owners, especially those with Scotties, Westies, Beagles, Shelties and Mixed Breeds over 5 years of age to routinely screen their dogs. Dr. Cerf says, “If we catch the cancer while the tumor is small, we have a much better chance of removing it.” Watch the video to see this surgery in action. You will see a tumor that is almost entirely blocking the passage of urine, and then the results after the surgery, which allowed the pet to live a comfortable, quality life.

Causes for an enlarged uterus and my results?

I have a history of menorraghia to as far back as I can remember. I am 46 yrs of age and usually have my period every 23 days. Usually lasts for 2 heavy days and then 5 days light spotting. I had an ablation done in 2008 that was good for a year but then it went right back to my heavy periods. My uterus has also always been retroverted.
I just got back from my OB/GYN who tried to do an endomentrial biopsy but said he “couldn’t get in and now wants to schedule a D&C at Hospital. I am very concerned about a recent ultrasound report that reads as follows:
Findings(Transabdonimal) This study has a prior study for comparison dateded 12/7/09. At that time, the endomentrium measured 7 mm. There is a small posterior leiomyoma that measured 1.2 cm. Currently, the uteris in in a normal anteverted anteflexed, orientation, but has enlarged since the prior study, currently measuring 13.9. x 7.8 x 5.6 cm compared to a prior measurement of 8.8x 6.9×5.9 cm. The endometrium measures 12 mm, which is mildly thickened and is considerably thicker than the previous measurement of 7 mm. The right ovary is normal measuring 2.1 x 2.2.x1.9 cm There is a cyst in the left adnexa measuring 1.7 x 1.2×1.3 cm. There is no free fluid within the cul-de-sac.
Conclusion: The uterus has gotten considerably larger than on the prior stuy and the endometrium is thicker than on the prior study, currently measuring 12 mm.

Findings TRANSVAGINAL: Utiliing high resolution transvaginal techniques, the pelvis was evaluated. The uterus measures 13.9.x7.8×5.6 cm The endometrium is well seen and measures 12 mm. There is a small simple cyst in the left adnexa measuring 17 mm. The right ovary is grossly normal measuring 2.1×2.2×1.9cm. I do not see evidence for a leiomyoma.

CONCLUSION:
1. There is diffuse and heterogeneous enlargement of the uterus with mild thickening of the endomentrium, but I do not see a discrete leiomyoma.
2. There is a bening cyst in the left adnexa as discussed above.

I am so worried about this it is making me sick. Does the size of uterus have anything to do with when in the menstrual cycle the ultrasounds are done? Could this be of concern for cancer?

Poly cystic ovarian syndrome question.. a little scared?

I just turned 18 recently and I’ve struggled with acne and excessive hair growth for years. I was taking medication for my acne from my dermatologist and dealing with the hair growth problems through Laser hair removal. I was told to take a blood test to see whether I had Polycystic ovarian syndrome and the blood test showed that it was negative. However, I’m currently on vacation in India and our family dermatologist here claims that PCOS can only be diagnosed through sonography or ultrasound. I also noticed that my hair has started thinning out but my periods seem rather normal and i dont think i’m excessively overweight by any means (I weigh around 128 and I’m 5’3) but some medical websites stated that fat distribution with this disease tends to lie mainly in the stomach area and the thighs.
1) Who should I contact for a test for this, a gynecologist an endocrinologist or retake the blood test through my physician?
2) Is this disease lethal and are the statements about it being the cause of permanent infertility true?

Female urinary catheterization. Was it done properly?

I went to urologist today. He is an older, old-school doctor. No bedside manner, but knows his stuff. He diagnosed me 15 months ago with intersticial cystitis. Doc did an ultrasound today and said I had urinary retention and he broke out the catheter. Never had this before. I asked is it was okay to do it since I started mentruating yesterday and had a tampon in. No prob, he said. Then he says okay drop your drawers. So there I am on the table with nothing but a thin paper cover that ended up above my waist anyway with a tampon string hanging out. (It felt pretty humiliating.) Doc put on gloves, but didn’t seem to use any sterile techniques. No sterile drape. I don’t think he did any sterile cleansing of the area. He just started prodding around to find the uretha and stuck the catheter in. After the procedure, during which 4 cc’s of urine was passed, he ordered a cysto and ultrasound. Then gave me a scrip for an antibiotic to take for two days to make sure that I don’t get infection from cath. Am I overreacting, or does this sound way to unsanitary and informal?
Thanks Booyah. As if the whole process were not humiliating enough, you ask if I know that blood and urine come from different holes? Of course I do. But I also know that those “holes” are very close to one another. And I’ve given many urine samples where I’m told to do clean catch specimen which requires wiping with a sterile cleaning cloth. So I am wondering if the lack of sterile technique could increase chance of infection and whether those who are familiar with the procedure would find his techniques concerning.
Thanks to all of those who took time to provide thoughtful responses (the others…wondering why they bother to respond). I will be changing docs. thanks.

Kidney Stone Question?

I had an ultrasound the other day as a follow up to one that I’d had several months ago. They just happened to find a 6mm stone in the kidney. I don’t have any symptoms of it yet, but now I’m scared that it’s going to move and I’m going to have all this pain that everyone describes. How long can this thing sit there without causing any symptoms? Is it just a matter of time before I’m in excruciating pain? I feel like a ticking time bomb is in my stomach. Has anyone had the laser surgery to break them up? What was it like? What should I do?
